Comparing Structure Types

Custom tensile, air-supported and pre-engineered frame structures use different structural systems and offer different levels of design flexibility. Compare what each type requires and where each is commonly used.

How Do Custom Tensile, Air Domes and Frame Structures Compare?

Custom tensile is the fully custom, architecturally driven option: the form is designed for the site, the membrane and cables do the structural work, and nothing has to stay plugged in for the building to stand up. Air domes and frame structures trade that freedom for standardization and, in the case of a dome, for enormous clear spans. Each approach offers different advantages depending on the project, site, span, and intended use.
