XR-PW Replaces Failing Hypalon Cover at Water Treatment Facility

XR-PW was chosen as a replacement for a failing hypalon cover at the Staunton Public Works Water Treatment Plant in Virginia.

Civil design engineers selected 8130 XR-PW to replace a failing Hypalon® cover at a Virginia water treatment facility for its exceptional strength, long-term UV resistance and ease of repair.

Project Details:Staunton Public Works Water Treatment Plant

Name: Staunton Public Works Water Treatment Plant
Dates: Installed in 2002
Location: Staunton, VA

Project Story:

After nine years of service, the Hypalon® cover at the Staunton, Virginia water treatment plant presented a problem. During an inspection, several holes and tears as well as numerous seam failures were discovered. Staunton officials considered repairing the Hypalon cover, but decided that this was not feasible due to the difficulties associated with making repairs to this type of material. They decided instead that the best option was to replace the cover entirely while performing other plant upgrades.

After evaluating many NSF 61 approved geomembranes for the replacement cover, process and civil design engineers from Hayes, Seay, Mattern & Mattern selected 8130 XR-PW for its exceptional strength, long-term UV resistance and ease of repair. In addition, slopes to the low operating level were covered with an XR-PW skirt to prevent future chafing of the new cover. XR-PW was also used to create floating baffles that would increase contact time. These and other plant upgrades contributed to an enormous capacity increase – from 6 million gallons per day to 12 million gallons per day.
