ODOT Facility Relies on Shelter-Rite® for Bulk Storage Facility

Based on ODOT requirements, Legacy selected a PVC Architectural Fabric manufactured by Seaman Corporation to complete the structure.

Based on ODOT requirements, Legacy selected a PVC Architectural Fabric manufactured by Seaman Corporation to complete the structure.

Tulsa_Port_of_Catoosa.jpgPROJECT DETAILS:

Client: Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT)
Fabric: PVC Architectural Fabric
Architect/Engineer: Dewberry Engineers Inc.
Fabrication and Installation: Legacy Building Solutions, South Haven, Minnesota

PROJECT STORY:

In 2012, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) faced the critical need for an expansive bulk salt storage facility at the Tulsa Port of Catoosa to accommodate roadway deicing salt. The project, overseen by Craig Swengle, P.E., an Associate Vice President for Dewberry Engineers Inc. and the primary engineer/architect at the Port of Catoosa, aimed to address the growing demand for salt storage capacity. The new facility was designed with a remarkable capacity to store 50,000 tons of salt, effectively nearly doubling the existing storage available in Oklahoma at that time.

Craig Swengle emphasized the significance of the new building in enhancing ODOT’s operational efficiency. According to Swengle, this new building allowed for ODOT to “dispense the salt stored at this new location to maintenance distribution sheds before major snow or ice events during the winter. Previously, salt was stored in the open and covered with tarps after being off-loaded from barges. The new building will protect the salt supply from being compromised by wind and precipitation.”

This marked a significant improvement from the previous practice of storing salt in the open, covered only with tarps after being off-loaded from barges. The introduction of the new building will provide a more secure and efficient solution for managing salt resources during winter weather challenges.

This strategic infrastructure upgrade not only addressed the immediate storage needs but also showcased the foresight in modernizing salt storage practices, ensuring the effectiveness of ODOT’s winter maintenance operations at the Tulsa Port of Catoosa.
