FIBERTITE ROOFING SYSTEMS USED TO DEVELOP ASTM STANDARD

Posted by Seaman Corporation on May 22, 2008

WOOSTER, Ohio - FiberTite® Roofing Systems by Seaman Corporation has played a pivotal role in setting new standards for KEE roofing membrane performance.

In new standards released by ASTM International, FiberTite was selected as the benchmark membrane for the development of the new ASTM D6754-02 standard for membranes using KEE - Ketone Ethylene Ester.

DuPont Elvaloy® KEE is the principal polymer used in the manufacture of the FiberTite Roofing Systems membrane. Seaman Corporation uses KEE as the foundation of the FiberTite membrane coating formula to ensure the membrane's long-term strength and continuing flexibility, enabling specifiers to better forecast membrane performance, especially in harsh environments.

The ASTM committee relied upon actual and historical FiberTite membrane performance data and physical property evaluations to construct the ASTM D6754-02 standard for desirable membrane strength, flexibility and resistance to delamination. To comply with this new standard, the polymer content of a membrane must be composed of a minimum of 50% KEE. ASTM standards are meant to provide guidance in selecting roofing products.

Still using the core formula first developed in 1979, Seaman Corporation uses a proprietary process to apply the KEE coating over a woven polyester base cloth - also a proprietary design - in a way that forms a monolithic bond with the fabric.

For almost a quarter century, FiberTite has outlasted competitive systems by achieving superior performance ratings in resistance to thermal shock, abrasion, puncture, the effects of UV rays and wear that is common to frequent rooftop traffic.

Adherence to ASTM standards typically is voluntary in the over 130 industries with which the organization is involved. However, government regulators often give ASTM standards the force of law by citing them in laws, regulations and codes.

A not-for-profit organization, ASTM provides a global forum for the development and publication of voluntary consensus standards for materials, products, systems and services. Founded in 1898, ASTM has established standards that typically are accepted and used in research and development, product testing, quality systems and commercial systems around the world.
